Per Baby-Friendly USA: “All direct care staff and direct care providers [physicians, midwives, physician’s assistants, and advanced practice registered nurses] who provide education, assessment, support, intervention, assistance and/or follow-up with regards to infant feeding must have required competencies verified and completed training on identified areas needing improvement, within 6 months of hire.

Training for Direct Care Staff
– 14-hr Competency Based Training Course

This course is designed to instill knowledge and foundational skills for engaging and supporting families with breastfeeding and human milk feeding. This newly designed course aligns with the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, USA® sixth edition 10 steps to successful breastfeeding. Health care providers will leave this course with a solid foundation of how to provide comprehensive lactation support and manage common feeding challenges during the first few days of life. The instructors designed this course using evidence-based information to remove barriers to breastfeeding and human milk feeding. The completion Certificate grants 14.0 Nursing Contact Hours – American Nurses Credentialing Center –ANCC, 14.0 L-CERPs recognized by IBLCE, 14.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ - from the Interstate Postgraduate Medical Association – IPMA. Our BFHI Team suggests that your Multidisciplinary Task Force Subcommittee perform a knowledge and competency gap analysis to determine the educational needs of your staff. You can also refer to BFUSA’s Guidelines and Evaluation Criteria, Sixth Edition, specifically Appendices C1 and C2. BFUSA also has a comprehensive Competency Verification Tool which is available to hospitals who are registered with them.
